The online B.A. in Communication program requires 123 credit hours, which can be achieved with the following courses. Two tracks are available online:
- Strategic Communications
- PR & Advertising
Liberal Arts Core Courses (31-55 credits)*
All Alvernia University students are required to complete between 31-55 credits toward the Liberal Arts Core. Transfer work may be applicable for this area. As part of the application process, students receive specific information regarding remaining credits.
General Elective Requirements (as needed)**
Communication Major Requirements (45 credits)
Courses that all communication majors must complete are:
COM 103 – Fundamentals of Speech
COM 122 – Mass Media: Theory and Application
COM 131 – Writing for the Media
COM 420 – Law and Ethics of Mass Communication
COM 480 – Research Seminar OR COM 481 – Internship
In addition, you’ll need to take 6 credits in Communication electives, 9 credits in English electives and 6 credits in related electives.
*Students entering the program with 70+ transferable credits or an associate degree must complete 30/31 Liberal Arts Core credits.
**A total of 123 credits, including 3 credits in a human diversity course, are required to complete a bachelor’s degree. To adhere to Franciscan Values, community service hours are also required.
***Students in the B.A. in Communication program will be required to take an Excel course.
For entrance into the Online B.A. in Communication program, you’ll need to:
- Complete an application.
- Submit official transcript of high school grades or GED scores.
- Submit official transcript(s).
- Submit a copy of DD214 from military (if applicable).
